GrandPooBear Intro

GrandPooBear requested a new intro to use for his YouTube channel. I initially thought of using a 2D/pixelated style like the old retro games, but I decided it would be interesting to step out of the comfort zone, and draw the viewers’ attention in with an eye-catching 3D animation!

Modeling, concept, and animation by Corey Williams.

Storyboard

Typically with most projects, my first approach starts with a basic thumbnail storyboard. Nothing too fancy! Just something to get a good understanding of the overall framework of the project.

From the storyboard sketches, we have the character sitting in front of a computer monitor in anticipation. After looking at the monitor for a few seconds, the camera zooms in through the monitor screen and reveals a box. The box then explodes, shooting out a bunch of coins and revealing a logo. After the reveal, the intro concludes by transitioning out.

Modeling, Materials, and Lighting

Next, I began working on the 3D modeling portion of the project. Once I finished modeling all of the assets, I setup the scenes by positioning everything in the right place and scaling some of the objects. After that, I then moved on to adding materials and finally, lighting the scenes.

Animation

Lastly, with everything setup, I jumped right into the animation! I animated the cameras first to get a good feel for the overall timing; making sure they weren’t moving too fast or too slow. Then I started animating the main subjects, like the character and the box of coins. With both scenes being fully animated, I rendered them, and brought them into After Effects to combine the scenes together, do some color correction, and add sound effects. All to create the final product!
